Rules are a part of Voluum Automizer. They are used to launch predefined actions when certain conditions are met. Sample use cases include:

  • Stopping an unprofitable campaign
  • Sending an alert when your offer stops converting
  • Assigning a marker to profitable custom variables.

Controlling your campaigns with Rules requires you to have a supported traffic source integrated with Voluum. In order to learn how to integrate, read the Full Integration article.

Rules can be managed from the AUTOMIZER module, in the Rules tab.

From there, you can add new rules and view currently active rules.

How Does It Work?

Voluum Automizer constantly checks your metrics against set conditions to verify if an action defined in a rule should be launched. The metrics are checked within a given time frame. The time frame is dynamic, meaning that it changes with every check.

Consider the following example:

You create a rule at 2 P.M that sends an alert if certain conditions are met. You select the 1-day time range. After a short amount of time, Automizer will perform checks to see if a condition set in this rule has been met between 2 P.M. yesterday and 2 P.M. today. If yes, then an alert will be generated. If not, Voluum will keep performing checks every short amount of time rounding up to the last full hour. After 3 P.M. it will check if a condition has been met between 3 P.M. yesterday and 3 P.M. today and so on. An alert will be generated only if a condition is met in a time range that ends at the current time.

Automizer also makes sure that it will not send an alert about the same event twice. When performing checks, it will wait until conditions have been met uniquely within the selected time frame.

Adding a Rule

There are two ways of adding a rule:

  • Manually, by defining all the required parameters, conditions, and actions to be launched
  • From a library, by selecting a rule template

Note that you can edit rule templates from a library to adjust them to your needs. Using a rule template simply prefills the text fields and conditions.

Adding a rule from the library:

  1. In Voluum, go to the AUTOMIZER module.

  2. In the Rules tab, click the Automizer rules library button.

  3. Use filtering options to narrow down your search.

  4. Click the Create rule button.
  5. Edit any settings according to your needs and click the Save button.

Adding a rule manually

  1. In Voluum, go to the AUTOMIZER module.
  2. In the Rules tab, click the New Automizer rule button.

  3. In the New optimization rule pop-up window, provide a name for your rule into the Rule name text field.
  4. Select a type of element from the Create rule for menu by clicking the appropriate radio button. Selecting an element may require setting additional options related to this element. You can select the following types of elements:

    • Campaign (select if you want to target a specific campaign or all from a selected traffic source)
    • Offer
    • Dimension (select a traffic source and a dimension)
  5. Select the concrete element or elements from the drop-down menu that this rule will apply to. You can select up to 20 elements within one rule. If you select campaigns, you can also choose to apply this rule to all campaigns from a selected traffic source.
  6. Select an action to launch. Selecting an action requires setting some additional options related to this action. You can select between the following actions:

    • Pause and resume
    • Alert (select how you want to send an alert and which users should see it)
    • Assign markers (select a marker)
    • Dayparting (set dayparting schedule)
    • Change bid (define how and by how much a bid should change). You can change your bid by:

      • Value
      • Percentage of value
      • Percentage of a selected column
    • Change bid factor (define how and by how much a bid factor should change)
    • Add to list (select list)

Voluum Note: Not all actions are available for every entity.

Click the Add action button to select more than one action that will be launched simultaneously (for example, pause and send an alert).

  7. Click the Next button.

  8. Select a time frame that this rule will be applied to from the Time frame drop-down menu. You can select the following time ranges:

    • 1 hour
    • 3 hours
    • 12 hours
    • 1 day
    • 2 days
    • 3 days
    • 7 days
    • 14 days
    • 30 days
    • 90 days
  9. Select rule frequency. You can select the following frequencies:

    • 15 minutes
    • 30 minutes
    • 1 hour
    • 2 hours
    • 4 hours
    • 8 hours
    • 16 hours
    • 24 hours
    • 48 hours

Voluum Note: Some frequencies are only available for certain time frames.

  10. Select a time period to exclude from the rule. Note that some time periods are only available for certain time frames.

    • 1 hour
    • 2 hours
    • 4 hours
    • 8 hours
    • 16 hours
    • 24 hours
    • 48 hours

Voluum Note: Some exclusion time periods are only available for certain time frames.

  11. Set condition in the form of a logical sentence. To do that, set the following values and options:

    • Metric. You can choose between the following metrics:

    • Logical condition. You can select the following conditions:

      For the Dimension metric

      For the remaining metrics

      • Is on the list
      • Is not on the list
      • Is lower than
      • Is higher than
    • Type of value. You can select the following types:

      • Static value.
      • % of the value. If you select this option, you will have to select the percentage value, another metric and a time frame. In the screenshot below, we provide an example of how to set a condition that will launch when the number of conversions is less than 5% of visits in the last hour.

You can add additional conditions by clicking the Add condition button. The rule will only be launched when all conditions are met.

  12. Click the Save button.

What is the difference between auto-rules and rule-based paths?

Auto-rules are a part of Voluum Automizer. They operate under 'if/then logic' and allow launching certain actions when set conditions are met. Auto rules may send notifications or pause campaigns in integrated traffic sources. Rule-based paths on the other hand define where visitors are directed to. A rule-based path consist of a rule, so an element that describes a visitor characteristic (such as language, device type, uniqueness of a visit), and a path, so a collection of landers and offers with various weights assigned to them. If there is a visitor that matches the rule conditions from a rule-based path, they are redirected toward this path. If not, they are checked against next rule-based path in order or, if there are no more rule-based paths in a campaign, are directed toward a default path.

How to setup a notification for every purchase event?

You cannot generate a notification for every purchase event in Voluum. Voluum auto-rules that are used to send notifications launch actions when certain conditions are met. You can create a rule that sends a notification when a number of conversions passes certain threshold in a given time frame.

Do you support SMS notifications?

No, Voluum supports email notifications, as well as browser notifications or notifications generated by Voluum mobile app.
