TikTok and Its Family of Apps as a Traffic Source


TikTok is one of the most downloaded mobile app in recent months. It allows its users to share short talent videos. TikTok family consists of other apps, video or news related. They all use TikTok Ads UI to offer a unified ad-buying space, however, they offer different placements and ad formats, and are available in different countries. The TikTok family of apps is as follows:

  • TikTok
  • Vigo
  • TopBuzz
  • BuzzVideo
  • NewsRepublic
  • Babe

Tiktok integration

TikTok allows you to advertise a web page or an app. Conversion tracking is supported by an API integration with Voluum. The benefits of the integration include:

  • Passing conversions from Voluum to TikTok
  • Synchronizing costs
  • Auto-rules
  • Change bid on campaign
  • Pause and resume campaigns from within Volumm
Before You Start

There are several things required for setting up tracking. Make sure you have the following before you dig into this guide:

  • An active Voluum account.
  • An active TikTok for Businnes account.
  • An offer and, optionally, a lander.

I. Create a Campaign in Voluum

For the first step, you need to create a campaign in Voluum. This will provide you with a campaign URL that you will submit as your destination URL in TikTok. In order to do so, perform the following steps:

  1. Create an offer element. Read the Add an Offer to Voluum article to learn how to do that.
  2. (Optionally) Create a lander element. Read the Add a Lander Element article to learn more.
  3. Create a traffic source element. Voluum provides you with the TikTok traffic source template, so you can use it and skip most of the manual setup. In order to use this template, perform the following steps:

    1. In Voluum, go to Traffic sources.
    2. Click the Create button and select the Traffic source option from the drop-down menu.

    3. Select the TikTok traffic source option.
    4. Click the Next button.
    5. Adjust any option you want. Once you have done so, click the Save button.
  4. Create a campaign

    In Voluum, go to Campaigns, click the Create button and select the Campaign Simple or Campaign Advanced option from the drop-down menu.

    1. In the New campaign form, select the TikTok traffic source that you have just created from the Traffic source drop-down menu.
    2. Provide a name for the campaign in the Campaign name text field.
    3. Select the cost model from the Cost model drop-down menu and provide a cost value in the Cost value text field.
    4. Select the Private Workspace that you want this campaign to be assigned to from the Workspace drop-down menu.
    5. (Optionally) Select a lander you have previously created from the Landers drop-down menu.
    6. Select the offer that you have just created from the Offers drop-down menu.
    7. Click the Save button.

    8. Click the Copy button next to the campaign URL to copy it to the clipboard and paste it into any text editing tool.

    9. Click the Done button.

II. Create a Campaign in TikTok

The second thing you need to do is to set up a campaign in TikTok Ads:

  1. In TikTok Ads, go to the Campaigns view.
  2. Click the Create button.

  3. Select the campaign objective. In this guide, the Conversions objective has been selected. This will require configuring a conversion. This step does not occurr with other campaign objectives.
  4. Provide a name for your campaign name in the Campaign Name text field.
  5. Click the Continue button.

  6. Provide a name for your ad group in the Ad Group Name text field.
  7. Paste the campaign URL that you have copied from Voluum into the URL text field.
  8. Click the Create new button to create the new conversion.

    A new browser tab will open. You will have to configure the conversion pixel there. Continue the setup in this new tab and, once you finish, go back to the first browser tab.

    1. In the new browser tab. click the Create Pixel button.

    2. Provide a name for the pixel in the Pixel Name text field.
    3. Click the Save pixel and set rules button.

    4. Select if you want to install the pixel manually on your "Thank You" page or if you want to use Google Tag Manager to manage this script. We recommend the second option, as Google Tag Manager can be also used to fire the Voluum conversion tracking pixel.     5. Click the I know, start setup button.
    6. Connect your Google account that has Google Tag manager configured and click the Complete button.

    7. Click the Custom conversion button next to the pixel that you have created to set up the conversion event.
    8. Provide the URL of your "Thank You" page and click the Page View button. This will load your web page's content into the iFrame below.
    9. Click the element that you wish to track.

    10. Confirm tracking of this element by clicking the Save button.

    11. Provide a name for your conversion event.
    12. Select a conversion type.
    13. Click the Complete button.

      You have now successfully configured a conversion pixel. You can go back to the previous browser tab to continue the campaign setup.

  9. In the campaign setup tab, click the Refresh button.

  10. Select the conversion pixel that you have created from the drop-down menu.
  11. Provide a name for your product in the Display name text field.
  12. Select or upload a profile image.
  13. Select a category for your ad from the Category drop-down menu.
  14. Provide at least one tag in the Ad tags text field.

  15. Define a location.

  16. Set your budget.

  17. Set your bid.
  18. Click the Next button.

  19. Upload your creative in the form of an image or a video or use the built-in image or video generator.

  20. Click the Submit button.

  21. Click the Add Balance button to top-up your account.

Once you top-up your account, your campaign will run.
