Impression Pixel Forwarding

This feature allows to send information about impression to a 3rd party platform (for example, a tracker or other analytical solutions).

How Does It Work?

The standard impression tracking pixel is a small script that activates on page load and sends a request to Voluum with impression info. Read the Tracking Impressions in Voluum article to learn more.

The impression pixel forwarding feature build upon this setup by adding an option to send this request to another platform as well. This platform is defined in the fwd_url parameter of the impression pixel URL.

The way it works is as follows: upon page load, the impression tracking pixel sends a request to Voluum and then returns the 302 code to the web browser. Impression tracking pixel then provides an encoded forwarding URL passed in the fwd_url parameter.

The forwarding URL can be any encoded URL which domain has been added to the Impression Pixel Forwarding list in Voluum settings.

Set Up Impression Pixel Forwarding

In order to use this feature, you need to set up two things:

  • Add 3rd party platform's domain to the list in Voluum settings
  • Customize impression pixel URL with fwd_url parameter.

Follow the steps below:

  1. Add 3rd party platform's domain to the list.

    1. In Voluum, go to the Settings page.
    2. Go to the Domains tab.
    3. In the Impression pixel forwarding section, provide one or more domain names, each one in the new line.
    4. Click the Save button.

  2. Customize impression pixel URL with fwd_url parameter.

    1. Add a traffic source with impression tracking enabled.
    2. Create a campaign with that traffic source.
    3. In the TRACKING tab of the campaign creation form, click the Copy button next to the impression pixel URL to copy it to the clipboard.

    4. httpz://voluum_dedicated_domain.com/impression/9aaece5d-5aac-49b4-98a8-85f634b2a292?fwd_url=another_domain.com/track

Paste the impression pixel URL to any text editing tool and add the ?fwd_url=ENCODED_URL parameter, where URL is the forwarding URL of your 3rd party tracking platform. Remember that this URL has to contain the same domain that you have added to the Impression Pixel Forwarding list in the previous step and it has to be encoded.

Your modified impression pixel URL should look like this:

    5. Submit the modified impression pixel URL to your traffic source.
