Using Adsterra as a Traffic Source

Voluum TRK Case Study Adsterra

Adsterra is a performance-focused ad network that reaches a global audience. They offer various ad formats, cost models and verticals for you to choose from. Read the following guide to learn how to use their traffic and track it with Voluum.

Table of Contents

Before You Start

Before reading this guide, there are some things that you need to have prepared. These things are:

  • An active Voluum account.

  • An active Adsterra account.

  • An offer to promote.

  • Optionally, a landing page.

Having everything ready will allow you to set a working campaign funnel as you read.

I. Get a Traffic Source Postback URL

We start with getting a traffic source postback URL from Adsterra. It is a link that allows Voluum to pass information about conversion to Adsterra. This link should be submitted during a campaign setup process in Voluum. It is an optional step, so if you do not want to share this information with Adsterra, go to part 2 of this guide.

In order to get a traffic source postback URL, perform the following steps:

  1. In Adsterra, click the hamburger_icon.png icon in the top left corner of the screen.

  2. Select the Tracking and then the Conversions options from the menu on the left.

  3. In the Conversion tracking view, select the postback type by selecting an appropriate radio button.

  4. Select Voluum as a tracking system.

  5. Click the Generate postback button.

  6. Click the copy_icon.png button to copy the link to the clipboard.

With the traffic source postback URL stored in your clipboard, you can go to the next part of this guide.

II. Create a Campaign in Voluum

In this part, you have to create a complete campaign funnel in Voluum. This will provide you with a campaign URL that you will submit to Adsterra. In order to create a campaign in Voluum, perform the following steps:

  1. Create an offer element. Read the Creating an Offer Element article to learn how to do that.

  2. (Optionally) Create a lander element. Read the Create a Lander Element article to learn more.

  3. Create a traffic source element. In this step, you will have to create a traffic source element and provide Adsterra's tracking tokens there, so information passed in a campaign URL will be correctly recognized by Voluum. Read further to learn how to do that:

    1. Go to the Traffic sources tab.

    2. Click the New traffic source button.

    3. Click the Create custom button.

    6. Scroll down to Advanced settings section.

    7. In the Advanced settings provide the following information:

      • Adsterra's tokens that you want to track in the Placeholder column. There are the following tokens:

        • ##PLACEMENT_ID##

        • ##CAMPAIGN_ID##

        • ##SUB_ID_SHORT##

        • ##DEVICE_BRAND##

        • ##BROWSER_NAME##

        • ##USER_OS##

        • ##USER_CARRIER##

        • ##USERAGENT##

        • ##REMOTE_LANGUAGE##

        • ##BANNER_ID##

      • Parameter names in the Parameter column. You can select provide any names, generic (sub1, sub2) or descriptive (placement_id, banner_id).

These parameter names will be combined into pairs with tokens that you have provided, and those pairs will be added to the campaign URL. When this link is activated by a visitor (when a visitor clicks an ad), Adsterra will replace these tokens with concrete values and Voluum will capture them and display in reports.

      • Meaningful names of these pairs that will show up in Voluum reports.

For example, in the above image, the "Placement" name will be used to show a value that the "##PLACEMENT_ID##" token has been replaced for, described by the "placement" parameter name.

    8. Click the Save button.

  4. Create a campaign

In Voluum, click the New campaign button that is available in CampaignsOffersLanders, and Traffic sources tabs. The New campaign form will appear.

      1. In the New Campaign form on the BASIC tab provide the name of your campaign in the Campaign name text field.

      2. (Optional) If you have the Workspaces feature enabled on your account, select the Private Workspace that you want this campaign to be assigned to from the drop-down menu. Read the Workspaces: Overview article to learn more.

      3. Select the Adsterra traffic source that you have just created from the drop-down menu.

      4. Select a cost model and provide a cost value. Because Adsterra does not support passing information about cost in a token, the Auto option will not work. If you want to learn more about tracking cost, read the Tracking Costs article.

      5. Click the Next button.
