Adding a Custom Domain

In Voluum you can use either the Dedicated Domain or the Custom Domain as a tracking domain. The Custom Domain allows you to track traffic only from your campaigns regardless of other users' activities. Even more, by adding the Custom Domain you can customize the campaign, click URLs, and tracking pixel URLs selectively (per campaign) with a domain of your choice.

Where to get custom domain from?

There are a large number of domain registrars available for purchasing a custom domain. Each one follows (roughly) the same configuration steps to add the Custom Domain to Voluum. The popular domain registrars include:

Choose your setup

Voluum now supports two ways of handling dedicated domains, which result in two different setup types for custom domain.

  • Standard dedicated domains (old way)
  • CloudFront dedicated domains (new way)

Starting from October 2023, Voluum offers CloudFront dedicated domains to new users. CloudFront is a CDN-type service that allows to connect traffic with destinations in a lightning-fast way. CloudFront also brings Voluum users enhanced privacy and DDoS protection. The migration to CloudFront domains will be rolled-up gradually and eventually will include all Voluum users.

You can check which version of setup applies to you by going to Settings / Domain and clicking Add custom domain.

Select how your custom domain settings look and click on the image below to see instructions for your setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have more questions about the domains? You might find the answer below:

I've added the custom domain, but it isn't working. What could be a potential problem?

To run high-volume campaigns, it is highly recommended that you set up and use a custom tracking domain in Voluum. While doing so, you need to set a CNAME record for your custom subdomain pointing to one of your legacy domains or, if only available, to your unique Voluum Dedicated Domain.

Following the CNAME configuration for your subdomain and after adding your custom domain to your Voluum account, it's possible that you will be returned with the following response after verifying the domain's DNS settings:

  • If you have set up a new domain, make sure to wait 2-20 hours to fully propagate Domain Name System (DNS).
  • If you are setting a CNAME record on an older domain, keep an eye out for the Time to Live (TTL) setting; by default, the TTL setting is set to 14400 seconds which is 4 hours. It means that your subdomain and CNAME may take that long to propagate. You can shorten this by modifying the TTL number for your CNAME record.
  • If the Dedicated Domain is assigned to your Voluum account, double-check the domain configuration on the registrar's side: the custom domain should point to the Voluum Dedicated Domain

Why should I use the Custom Domain?

To run high-volume campaigns, it is highly recommended that you set up and use a custom tracking domain in Voluum.

You need to keep in mind that the Voluum team does not take responsibility for what users run through the legacy domains, therefore there is a risk that the legacy domains may potentially get flagged by antivirus software, traffic sources, etc. Although the Dedicated Domains are only assigned to your account, still we encourage you to add the custom domain and next, set it up as the main domain in Voluum.

Can I enable SSL for my Custom Domain to have a fully secure campaign funnel?

Yes, you can request an SSL certificate for your Custom Domain. To do so, read the Enabling SSL for a Custom Domain article.

You can also use SSL on the Redirect Domain. Read the Enabling SSL for a Redirect Domain article to learn how to do so.

I want to downgrade my pricing plan and I wonder, what will happen with my Custom Domains?

Each pricing plan has a number of Custom Domains you can add to your account. If you have added more Custom Domains than the limit of your downgraded pricing plan then, starting from the new billing cycle, the most recently added domains that exceed this limit will stop receiving traffic. You will need to update your campaign funnels with other Custom Domain names or your Dedicated Domain name.

Should I use custom domain in Voluum?

It is recommended to use a custom domain to protect your Voluum dedicated domain from getting flagged, to track with 1st party cookies and to have a domain which name correlates with your offer.

How to change the domain for a custom one in campaigns which are using a dedicated domain?

To switch your campaigns from a Voluum dedicated domain to a custom domain, you must add the latter to Voluum and then select the custom domain you have added in campaign settings in Voluum. Read the Adding a Custom Domain article to learn more.
