Adding a Rule-Based Path for Unique Visits

Rule-based paths allow you to redirect visitors to different paths according to whether they have met certain criteria. The recent update of this feature enables you to use a uniqueness of a visit as one of these criteria as well. The following article describes from start to finish how to add a rule-based path for unique or non-unique visits.

Unique Visits

A visit is considered to be unique when a visitor activates a campaign URL for the first time or for every following time after a cookie-related to the original visits has died out. Currently, the lifetime of a cookie is 24 hours. Knowing that you can direct a non-unique visitor to another path to increase chances for a conversion, what will be described below.

Adding a Rule-Based Path for Unique Visits

In our example, we will create two paths: one for unique visitors, and the other for non-unique ones. Let's assume that you have already added offer and lander elements for both of these paths. In the second step, we will create a condition based on the uniqueness of a visit. In order to do so, perform the following steps:

  1. In Voluum, click the Create button and create a campaign in the advanced form.

  2. Provide all required information in the GENERAL tab and click the Next button.
  3. In the DESTINATION tab make sure that you have selected the Path radio button.
  4. Create a rule-based path for non-unique visitors.

    1. Click the Add rule button.
    2. Provide a name for the rule in the Rule name text field.
    3. Click the Add condition button.
    4. Select the Unique visits option from the drop-down menu,
    5. Select the Is not logical condition to ensure, that only non-unique visits will be directed to this path.
    6. Click the Apply button.

    7. Click the New path button.
    8. Provide a name for the path in the Path name text field.
    9. Select lander and offer elements that you wish to direct non-unique visitors to.

  5. Set up a default path for unique visitors.

    1. In the Default path section, click the New path button.
    2. Provide a name for the default path in the Path name text field.
    3. Select lander and offer elements that you wish to direct unique visitors to.
    4. Click the Save button.

You have successfully created a campaign with a rule-based path for non-unique visits. Right now, each visitor passing through Voluum will be checked against the uniqueness of its visit. If Voluum detects that a visitor is a non-unique, it will direct him or her towards a path defined in the rule-based path. The remaining traffic, which is constituted of unique visitors, will be directed towards a path defined in the default path.
