Tracking Impressions in Voluum

In Voluum you can also track ad impressions. One ad loading on a page is one ad impression. In Voluum impression tracking is free and impressions are not counted as billed events.

To track impressions in Voluum, you need to make it enabled in a traffic source and then, configure your campaign setup appropriately. The below steps describe a basic configuration for a campaign funnel where impressions are tracked.

Voluum Note: Your traffic source platform has to support impression tracking. Without their support, impression tracking will not work. Refer to your traffic source platform documentation.

I. Enable Impression Tracking in a Traffic Source Setup

Follow the steps outlined below to enable impression tracking for a traffic source:

  1. In Voluum, go to Traffic sources. The Traffic sources view will show up.

  2. To turn on the impression tracking for a traffic source entity, edit the existing traffic source component or create a new one.
  3. Expand the More tracking options section and enable the Impression tracking toggle:

  4. Click the Save button. You have enabled the tracking impression for the traffic source element in Voluum.
II. Get Your Campaign URL and Impression Pixel URL

Tracking impressions requires to add the campaign's URL and impression pixel URL copied from Voluum on the traffic source side. To do so, perform the following steps:

  1. Go to Campaigns.
  2. Click the Create button.
  3. Create a new campaign entity - you can take a look at one of the below guides to make sure that you set the campaign element properly.

In addition, you need to keep in mind that you should fulfill the below requirements specific for the impression tracking:

    1. From the Traffic source drop-down menu select the traffic source entity where you have activated the impression tracking option.
    2. In the Cost model setting select the cost model option that you use to pay for traffic. You only need to select the CPM option if you pay for traffic with this model, but it is not required for setting up impression tracking.
  4. Once the campaign creation has been completed, click the Save button.
  5. The Campaign URL and Impression pixel URL are being generated. To track impressions, you need to insert both, the Impression pixel URL and Campaign URL, on the traffic source side. Copy the URLs and paste them to the traffic source. All variables are attributed to the impression pixel URL, not the campaign URL.

Voluum Note: It is very important that both URLs, the Impression pixel URL and Campaign URL, are placed in order to record impressions, pass variable data from the source, and ensure that traffic is redirected correctly to the campaign.

III. View Impression Data within Reports

To see impressions for your campaigns, you need to add the Impressions column to your Campaigns view:

  1. In the Campaigns view, click the button to enter column settings.
  2. Tick the box next to the Impressions option.
  3. After clicking the Save button, the Impressions should show up in one of the columns of the Campaigns view.
