Unique Visits and Unique Clicks

Voluum allows you to distinguish unique visits or clicks from subsequent ones in your reports. You can use this data to separate any repeated visits or clicks. In case of unique visits, you can create rule-based paths with uniqueness of the visit as a condition, as described in the Adding a Rule-Based Path for Unique Visits article. This can be used to divert unique or non-unique visits to a different path.

How Does It Work?

To make sure we are on the same page, a visit in Voluum is an activation of a campaign URL, while a click is an activation of a click URL on a landing page.

Voluum uses two techniques to determine, if a visit or click is unique:

  • Cookies. Whenever a visitor activates one of these links, a special cookie is being placed on a visitor's computer. If these links are activated again within a cookie's lifetime (24 hours), such an event will be counted as non-unique.

The cookie technology has its limitations. So, if a user:

    • Blocks or clears cookies
    • Changes computer or a web browser

Voluum will use the second 'server cache' technique.

  • Server cache. This technique tries to identify a visitor with the combination of two characteristics: IP address and user agent. Voluum checks servers for the occurrence of both of these features within the last hour. If it finds that a computer with the same IP address and user agent has made a visit to the specific campaign within one hour, such a visitor is treated as a non-unique.
