Setting Up a Direct Tracking Pixel for Offers

A Voluum campaign consists of several specific components that you need to configure before you start running the campaign. With the Direct Tracking Pixel for offers, you can use the Direct linking option in the campaign setup and direct visitors towards an offer page without an initial redirect.

This article instructs you on how to prepare a setup to use the direct tracking method.

Table of Contents
Before You Start

Before you start, you need to have:

  • A proprietary offer page. Offers from affiliate networks can only be used if you have an option to inject them with a code block.

  • An offer element added to Voluum.

I. Enable the Direct Tracking Option for the Traffic Source in Voluum

Firstly, you need to add a traffic source element in Voluum with the direct tracking method enabled. To do so, follow the steps:

  1. In Voluum, go to Traffic sources. The Traffic sources view will show up.

  2. Click the New traffic source button.

  3. Select the traffic source template and click the Next button.

  4. In the form go to the Direct tracking option and turn on the toggle.

  5. Provide all the other required settings and click the Save button.

II. Create a Direct Tracking Campaign

Once the option is enabled for the traffic source where you are going to advertise your offers, you need to create a campaign with the direct tracking method:

  1. In Voluum, go to Campaigns. The Campaigns view will show up.

  2. Click the New campaign button. The New campaign form will show up. In the following example, a simple campaign form will be used.

  3. Select the traffic source that you created in the previous section from the Traffic source drop-down menu.

  4. Provide other pieces of information in the GENERAL tab of the campaign's form. Remember to check the direct linking option. If you need to learn more details about creating the campaign in Voluum, go to the Create a Campaign - Part 1: General article.

  5. Click the Save button to go to the TRACKING tab.

  6. In the TRACKING tab, select a tracking domain that you are going to use.

  7. Select an offer that will have the direct tracking pixel implemented from the drop-down menu.

  8. Click the Copy button next to the Direct tracking URL (offer) to copy it and paste it to any text editing tool. This is the URL that you need to submit to the traffic source for approval. If you use more offer pages in the funnel, you need to select the one for which you want to use the direct tracking method.

  9. Click the Copy button next to the Direct tracking Pixel (offer) to copy it and paste it to any text editing tool. This is the JavaScript code block that you need to add to the offer page.

    Voluum Note: If you use a secure connection (https://) for your offer page, you need to have the JavaScript code block with an activated SSL certificate on your Voluum domain. If the certificate is already enabled in Voluum, the pixel will automatically show up in the correct version. If the certificate is disabled, you need to activate an SSL first. Once you have done that, copy the updated version of the pixel from the campaign and add the pixel on your offer page. Otherwise, the pixel would not work properly.

  10. Click the Done button to close the campaign's form. You have created the campaign in Voluum with the direct tracking method. Now, you need to configure your offer page.

III. Paste a Direct Tracking Pixel to Your Offer Page

In this section, you need to modify the offer page by adding the Direct tracking pixel (code block) you have previously copied. The code snippet itself might look sophisticated, but it is provided in a way that is just enough to copy-paste. It is not recommended to modify the code block because the delivered version ensures compatibility with the Voluum platform.

  1. Go to the offer page that you host externally.

  2. Paste the direct tracking pixel at the bottom of the body component of your offer's HTML:

IV. Tracking Conversions with The Direct Tracking Pixel for Offers

Tracking conversions with the Direct Tracking Pixel for Offers requires implementing another script on your offer page. This script will use the Voluum conversion tracking pixel feature to report a conversion when a certain event happens. Conversion-generating events usually include:

  • Page load

  • Button click

  • Email submission

Depending on the type of conversion-generating event, the JavaScript code block will have to be modified by you to fit your case. The general Direct Tracking Pixel conversion script template looks like this:

window['dtpCallback'].registerConversion(function (clickId) {
        // your code goes here

The your code here part of this code block has to include an event that will fire the conversion tracking pixel. In the example below, there is a complete code block that will fire the conversion tracking pixel when it receives a click ID value:

window['dtpCallback'].registerConversion(function (clickId) {
    document.body.innerHTML += '<img src="' + clickId + '&payout=OPTIONAL&txid=OPTIONAL" width="1" height="1"/>'
