Redirectless Tracking

Redirectless tracking is a new way to track without any redirects. Although we also provide the Direct Tracking Pixel as a method of tracking without the initial redirect, Redirectless tracking is the next iteration of this idea and should be future proof against industry changes that may affect the standard tracking based on redirects.

Redirectless Tracking vs Direct Tracking Pixel

The redirectless method is a step forward and a continuation of the idea behind the Direct Tracking Pixel. With the Direct Tracking Pixel, a visitor is guided to their destination (a landing page or an offer) directly and then the direct tracking script makes a request to Voluum with the visit information. However, the journey from a landing page to an offer was still not a direct one; a quick detour through a tracker was required. Now, with the redirectless method, there are no stopovers. No detours, no redirects, just a clean, simple flow from an ad to an offer page.

How Does It Work?

The redirectless method of tracking operates in a similar way to the Direct Tracking Pixel. This means that its key elements are the same:

  • Direct tracking URL

  • Direct tracking pixel (code block)

It works by directing a visitor to a landing page via a direct tracking URL. When a landing page loads, the direct tracking pixel makes a request to Voluum with visit info and campaign ID. The difference comes when a visitor clicks a CTA button. The direct tracking pixel replaces a standard click URL with a direct click URL that leads straight to an offer. The direct tracking pixel then makes a second request to Voluum with information about the click.

What are the Advantages of The Redirectless Method?

There are many advantages of using the method, the chief among them are:

  • Faster visitor journey

  • No bans from Google or Facebook

  • No visible redirects that may deter visitors

Before the Setup

To use the redirectless tracking method, you will need:

  • An externally-hosted landing page.

  • A lander and offer elements added to Voluum.

  • An active Voluum account with the redirectless tracking feature enabled.

Setting Up Redirectless Tracking

The setup is similar to the Direct Tracking Pixel.

I. Add a direct traffic source

In the first step, you need to add a traffic source element with the Direct tracking toggle enabled. In order to setup redirectless tracking, perform the following steps:

  1. In Voluum, go to Traffic sources. The Traffic sources view will show up.

  2. Click the New traffic source button.

  3. Select the Create custom traffic source option.

  4. Click the Next button.

  5. Expand the More tracking section.

  6. Turn on the Direct tracking toggle.

  7. Provide all the other required settings and click the Save button.


II. Add a redirectless campaign

  1. In Voluum, go to Campaigns. The Campaigns view will show up.

  2. Click the New campaign button and select the TRK Advanced campaign form.

  3. Select the traffic source that you created in the previous section from the Traffic source drop-down menu.

  4. Provide a name for the campaign in the Campaign name text field.

  5. Select a Workspace from the Workspace drop-down menu.

  6. Provide other pieces of information in the GENERAL tab of the campaign's form and click the Save button to go to the DESTINATION tab.

  7. In the DESTINATION tab, select either a default path or a rule-based one.

  8. Select the Redirectless option from the Redirect mode section.

  9. Select a lander or landers that will have the direct tracking script implemented from the drop-down menu.


    Voluum Note: Make sure that the lander you select here will be the same lander with the direct tracking script. If you use any intermediary landers, the Redirectless tracking will not work and you will get the Lander not matched error in the Error Log.

  10. Select an offer or offers (multiple offers will rotate) from the Offers drop-down menu.

  11. Click the Save button.

  12. Select a tracking domain from the Domains drop-down menu.

  13. Select a lander for which you want to generate a redirectless URL from the Direct tracking URL - lander drop-down menu.

  14. Click the Copy button to copy the Direct tracking URL to the clipboard and paste it to any text editing tool.

  15. Click the Copy button next to the Direct tracking Pixel (lander) to copy it and paste it to any text editing tool. This is the JavaScript code block that you need to add to the landing page.


    Voluum Note: If you use a secure connection (https://) for your landing page, you need to have the JavaScript code block with an activated SSL certificate on your Voluum domain. If the certificate is already enabled in Voluum, the pixel will automatically show up in the correct version. If the certificate is disabled, you need to activate an SSL first. Once you have done so, copy the updated version of the pixel from the campaign and add the pixel on your landing page. Otherwise, the pixel would not work properly.

  16. Click the Copy button next to the Click URL to copy it and paste it to any text editing tool.

  17. Click the Done button to close the campaign's form. You have created a campaign in Voluum with the Redirectless tracking method. Now, you need to configure the landing page in the funnel.


III. Paste the direct tracking script and a click URL into a landing page:

For the third step, you need to paste the Direct Tracking Script into your landing page's HTML. In order to do so, perform the following steps:

  1. Go to the landing page that you host externally.

  2. Paste the direct tracking pixel at the bottom of the body component of your landing page's HTML:

  3. Paste the click URL that you have copied from Voluum in the <body> section of your landing page.

IV. Submit a redirectless URL to a traffic source

Lastly, you need to submit a redirectless URL to a traffic source of your choosing. As it leads directly to a landing page, it should be accepted with ease.
