Tracking Google Ads with a Direct Method

Voluum TRK Google Ads Direct Method

Once you have created a campaign in Google Ads, you will need to create a campaign funnel in Voluum to handle Google's traffic. If you have selected the direct method of tracking, you will need to create the following campaign elements in Voluum:

  • Offer

  • Lander

  • Traffic Source

  • Campaign

Read the following steps to learn how to do that.

    6. (Optional) If you have the Workspaces feature enabled on your account, select the Workspace from the drop-down menu that this traffic source will be assigned to. To learn more, read the Workspaces: Overview article.

    7. In the Advanced settings section match Google Ads tokens with Voluum variables.

Google and Voluum, like many other platforms, use HTTP request parameters to pass information between each other. Parameters are part of a request URL and they come in the parameter_name={token} pairs, where:

      • parameter_name describes what type of information is passed in the token.

      • {token} is an automatically replaceable placeholder, that will be substituted with a concrete value upon clicking.

If you want to pass additional information from Google to Voluum (such as device type, ad set name and so on) and further to an affiliate network platform, you need to get those parameters from Google and provide parameter names in the Parameter column and the tokens in the Placeholder column. Provide also a name in the Name column that will be displayed in Voluum for this information type.

      Note

Voluum Info: Google provides many parameters that you can use to pass different types of information. Some of them are only applicable for certain campaign types and when the tracking has been set up on a certain level (ad, ad group, campaign, account levels). Refer to the Google Ads documentation for more information.

Parameters you have added here will be appended to the Direct Tracking URL that you will submit to Google.

    8. Click the Save button.

  4. Add a campaign element.

    1. In Voluum, go to Campaigns. The Campaigns view will show up.

    2. Click the New campaign button. The New campaign form will show up.

      Note

Voluum Info: If you have Voluum DSP platform integrated with your Voluum Tracker platform, you will have to select additionally New TRK campaign option from the drop-down menu. If you want to create the new Voluum DSP campaign, read the Getting Started with Voluum DSP article.

    3. Provide a unique and meaningful name for your campaign in the Campaign name text field. The name of the campaign in Voluum is based on the following pattern: {selected_traffic_source} - {country_label or Global} - {your_unique_custom_name}. You can use emojis in your campaign name: simply right-click on the Campaign name text field and select Emojis option from the menu.

    4. (Optional) If you have the Workspaces feature enabled on your account, select the Private Workspace from the drop-down menu that this campaign will be assigned to. To learn more, read the Workspaces: Overview article.

    5. Select the traffic source element with the direct tracking option that you have just created.

    6. Select cost model and provide the cost value. Note that you cannot track costs automatically, as Google does not have the cost token.

    7. Click the Next button.

Congratulations, you have set the destination where your visitors will be directed to. Now, for the last part when setting up tracking with a direct method, you need to paste the Direct Tracking Script into your landing page.

III. Paste a Direct Tracking Script into your landing page's HTML

When you inject the Direct Tracking Script into your landing page, every time this web page is reached from the Direct Tracking URL, the script will send information to Voluum, without redirecting user through the platform.

To learn how to inject the Direct Tracking Script, read the Setting up Direct Tracking Pixel article.

IV. Set up Tracking Conversion

All the steps described above regard tracking traffic coming from Google to your offer or offers. But the last step would be to pass information about a successful conversion back to Google. Thanks to that, your conversions will be visible in Google's statistics.

To learn how to pass information about conversion back to Google, read the Tracking Conversions with Google Ads article.
