Tracking Visits with Direct Tracking Pixel

Direct Tracking Pixel is an alternative tracking method in Voluum that enables you to track visits for campaigns without the initial redirect. It accelerates the process of redirecting visitors from the traffic source to your landing page because there is no redirection-in-the-middle. All visitors jump straight to the page. Moreover, it allows tracking organic as well as paid traffic coming to your landing page.

How Does It Work?

Direct Tracking Pixel consists of two parts:

  • Direct Tracking URL

  • Direct Tracking Script.

In a Direct Tracking URL you can find the cpid parameter that passes the campaign ID to a Direct Tracking Script. The Direct Tracking Script, located on a landing or offer page, passed the Campaign ID to Voluum to report a visit by making an HTTP request. This happens without the redirect. That is the reason why the method is often called direct tracking.

When used on a landing page, Direct Tracking Script for Landers adds an encrypted parameter to the click URL that is decoded on the Voluum's side to make a redirection to the correct offer.

Direct Tracking Pixel for Offers and Landers

There are two versions of the Direct Tracking Pixel for two campaign funnel types:

  • Direct Tracking Pixel for Landers. This is for a campaign funnel that uses landing pages. The Direct Tracking Script is implemented into landing page's HTML. Read the Setting Up a Direct Tracking Pixel for Landers to learn more.

  • Direct Tracking Pixel for Offer. This is for a campaign funnel that uses direct linking and drives visitors directly to an offer. The Direct Tracking Script is implemented into offer's HTML, so you need to have an ability to edit it. Read the Setting Up a Direct Tracking Pixel for Offers article to learn more.

Tracking Organic Traffic

Using Direct Tracking Pixel you can also track events that come from the organic traffic. Currently, the best way of setting it up is to create two campaigns where only this type of traffic will be tracked:

  • Campaign for paid traffic.

  • Campaign for organic traffic.

Keep in mind that it requires to modify the script that will go to a landing page in a campaign for organic traffic to make sure that events are registered in Voluum. For more information how to track this type of traffic, go to the Tracking Organic Traffic guide.

Benefits of Using the Pixel

Direct Tracking Pixel enables you to track visits in a completely new way what opens the door to many traffic sources where this type of tracking is highly recommended. Besides that, you can find also some other reasons for using it:

  • Boost:

    • Accelerate the process of redirecting visitors while going to your landing page; there is no redirection-in-the-middle like in case of the redirect tracking method.

    • Speed up your mobile campaign funnels, particularly when the mobile Internet connection is slow: without the initial redirect visitors go directly to your page

  • Scalability:

    • You can track all traffic that comes to your page, organic and paid one; both types of traffic can be monitored in your reports in Voluum.

  • Diversity:

    • Every refresh of the landing page is recorded as a new visit meaning that each time your visitor can see a different set of offers in a given campaign funnel

What are the Limitations of a Direct Tracking Method?

With all the advantages of this method in mind, one has to take some disadvantages into consideration when selecting a proper tracking method. For the Direct Tracking Pixel feature the limitations are as follow:

  • Landing page's setup: Voluum makes every effort for the Direct Tracking Pixel to be as easy to set up as possible, but in some scenarios using it might get tricky. If you use a solution for semi-automated web page design for your landing page, it may not allow you to inject any external code block.

  • Multiple landers: The Direct Tracking Pixel does not allow you to use more that one lander per campaign because of this direct link between a campaign and a landing page. Using several landing pages requires creating the same number of campaigns and submitting all those Direct Tracking URLs to your traffic source's platform

Technical Details

Direct Tracking Pixel is not based on a cookie technology, however it allows to track almost 90% of the Internet traffic that is generated by modern browsers such as Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Microsoft Edge, and Internet Explorer (⋝ IE9). Moreover, you can track events that come from the mobile traffic while using browsers such as Android browser, Mobile Safari, Windows Mobile, or Opera Mobile. In other words, most of the traffic can be easily tracked after setting up Direct Tracking Pixel on your landing page and it is not blocked by the visitors' browser settings.

In addition, within Direct Tracking Pixel you can get the same comprehensive set of data in reporting as for the redirect tracking method where the Voluum's campaign URL is used. All parameters of registered events are recorded and collected in the Voluum platform.
