Adding a Rule-Based Path

Rule-based paths offer you significantly more retargeting options than a simple lander-offer path. They allow you to direct users to certain paths based on logical criteria. If your audience is more diverse, you can easily direct them to an offer than they are more prone to take.

Rule-based paths can be set up in a flow and then used in your DSP campaigns.

Rule-based Path and a Default Path

There are two types of paths in a flow:

  • Rule-based paths: The paths where the traffic is targeted within defined constraints. Adding the rule-based paths is optional and should be driven by your business requirements. The rule-based paths consist of:

    • A rule that incorporates several conditions, such as a connection type, a country of origin, language of a visitor, or a mobile carrier

    • A path that directs users who have met the defined conditions set in the rule to the selected destination

  • Default paths: A single default path is always required in the flow. Default paths do not have any traffic-targeting options, thus traffic that does not match the criteria set in the Rule-based paths section will be passed along the default path.

Traffic flows through these two types of path in a specific order. At first, the traffic goes to rule-based paths. Any traffic that matches criteria set in the rule is directed towards the path in this rule-based path. The remaining traffic goes to the second rules-based path, and then to the third one and so on. Lastly, all the traffic that is not redirected towards the rule-based paths goes to the default path. So the order of paths goes as follows:

Now, an exemplary rule-based path that includes only WiFi traffic will be added.

I. Provide General Information

First of all, you need to provide basic information about the flow you want to define in the Voluum platform. To do so, perform the steps:

  1. In Voluum, go to Flows. The Flows view will show up.

  2. Click the New flow button. The New flow form will show up.

  3. Provide a unique name for your flow. The flow name is based on the following pattern: {country_label or Global} - {your_unique_custom_name}.

  4. If you want the flow to be geo-specific, select the Country from the drop-down menu. Keep in mind that the country selection does not determine the traffic source geo-location in any way.

Voluum Note: This option determines which landers and offers will be available to select from the drop-down menu within a path setup. If you select one country, for example United States, all the landers and offers with the United States and Global country label will be displayed during selection.

  5. Leave the default option in the Default redirect mode section for the global setup of the flow.

II. Add a Rule
  1. In the Rule-based paths section, click the Add rule button. The rule's details will show up on the left-hand side.

  2. Provide a name in the Rule name field.

  3. Click the Connection category and go to the Connection type section.

  4. Click the Add condition option.

  5. By default, the logical condition is set to Is to include all traffic that matches the selected criteria.

  6. Select Broadband and Wireless criteria from the Select connection type drop-down menu. This will include all WiFi traffic.

III. Add a Path

Next, you need to add a new path under conditions you specified:

  1. In the Rule-based paths section click the New path option. The path's details will show up on the left-hand side.

  2. Provide a name in the Path name field:

IV. Add a Lander
V. Add an Offer
VI. Add a Default Path

You have added an offer to your rule-based path. Now, you are going to create a default path where all non-WiFi traffic will be redirected to:

  1. In the Default paths section, click the New path option. The path's details will show up on the right-hand side.

  2. Provide a name in the Path name field.

  3. In the Landers section, click the search field.

  4. Select the lander that you have previously created from the drop-down menu.

  5. In the Offers section, click the search field.

  6. Select the Create new offer option from the drop-down menu.

  7. In the New Offer form provide your default offer details in the same manner as it was described above.

VII. Save the Flow

Once you have added one rule-based path and one default path, you can save the flow. Next, you can use this flow while creating a DSP campaign. You need to keep in mind that when you use the flow in many campaigns and make changes in the flow, those changes propagate to all campaigns.
